The Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík, Iceland, inspired the design of Charles Gandy’s Hallgrim Hat and Mittens. In turn, his design inspired Jamie McCanless to knit a coordinating scarf -  Hallgrim Scarf.

There is something romantic about the simple, flowing lines of this design. It hints at Arts and Crafts Movement and Prairie School styles mixed with, dare Jamie says, a touch of Lothlórien. Because the cable motifs at each end are joined by a length of pattern ribbing, the scarf can be knit to most any length. If you’re comfortable with 1x1 cables and knitting/purling through the back loop, it’s time to cast on!

Yarn: 440, 527, 614 yds (402, 482, 561 m) of light worsted weight

  • 1x1 cables
  • knit and purl through the back loop (k1tbl, p1tbl)
  • knit two stitches together (k2tog)
  • k2tog through the back loops (k2togtbl)
  • in one stitch, knit front and back of loop (kfb)

  • Slightly larger needles than usual show this design’s twisted stitches and cables to better advantage.
  • Urth Monokrom, an 8-ply light worsted yarn (about 11 wpi) results in a beautifully soft, draping Hallgrim Scarf. Heavier DK and worsted weight yarns require less yarn. (See pattern)
  • Two skeins of Urth Monokrom are enough for most knitters to make a 5 ft / 457 cm long scarf with little yarn left over.
  • Pattern sample shown here is Urth Monokrom colorway 4062.

This kit is not available in Urth Monokrom Worsted in person, only online.
